The other day at work, my husband was accused of being "whipped" while he described things he's done/does for me in our marriage. For those who don't know, one who is "whipped" is a person that will do or say anything that their significant others asks them to. In our culture today, this type of behavior is seen as demeaning or embarrassing for the "whipped" person. Now I want you to really think about the deeper issue here. If someone thinks being "whipped" is a bad thing is under the impression that you should only do something for a person if they're doing something for you. It's selfish and for those of us who are married, we all know that marriage constantly calls us to be selfless, therefore, being "whipped" means that you are willing to serve your spouse and make them happy. This service isn't to the point of slavery, it's not ugly like that. This service is a beautifully selfless act for the man or woman you love because you are willing to lay down your preferences or opinions to show your love. It's about being willing to do the dishes for your husband even when he typically does them because you know he's had a rough day at work. You HATE doing the dishes, but you do them anyway and seek nothing in return. Marriage is not about getting what you want, it's about refining two selfish people into selfless people. For the record, my husband told his co-worker that he knows he's whipped because he knows how to have a happy marriage. Priceless. :)
